Haven spent the next couple of hours signing autographs and answering questions for crew members while the brothers went over logistics with Jeremy and Todd. Haven had assumed Jeremy would be inside with them during the investigation, but Pierce explained that he’d monitor from the production tent instead.

Once it was dark, they began filming. They started by making a big production of locking Pierce, Jordan, and Haven inside the house with Todd, the cameraman, which was a bit absurd since the house of course locked from the inside. They could always just undo the deadbolt, open the door, and walk out, if they really needed to. But nobody pointed that out.

Jordan spent a while using his handheld digital recorder in different parts of the house, asking questions, then playing the recording back, listening for answers. He came up blank each time. Pierce seemed unfazed by the lack of response, but Haven could tell it frustrated Jordan.

“Forget it,” Jordan finally said. “Let’s do the séance.”

Todd turned off the camera while the brothers prepared. They had a box full of candles, which Jordan began setting in a circle, just as Elise had done. Pierce took Haven’s hand and pulled him down the hallway, to the office with the card tables where they’d talked the first day. Haven was pretty sure he’d chosen that room because there were no cameras set up there. Pierce closed the door behind them, then set his flashlight on end on the tabletop, giving them a small bit of illumination in the otherwise pitch-dark room.

Still, his face was mostly in shadow when he turned to face Haven. “I feel like an ass for not telling you about the séance before you agreed to come tonight.”

Haven shrugged. “I don’t think it would have changed my mind.”

“So you’re okay with this?”

“I think so.” Although now that it was almost time to begin, he was more nervous than he liked to admit. Was it possible his cousin was nearby? Was there really a chance he’d get to speak to her? “Do you think it will work?”

“I have no idea.” Pierce moved a bit closer. “First we’ll try it the way we did when we were kids. But if we don’t get something pretty quick, Jeremy’s adamant that we use the spirit box.”

“Why? Does he think it’s more effective?”

Pierce shrugged uncomfortably, but took a moment to consider his answer before responding. “The thing is, humans tend to be receptive to suggestion.”

“You’re saying we’re gullible.”

“That’s not the word I’d use. But we tend to find things we’re told to look for.”

“What do you mean?”

Pierce scrubbed one hand through his hair, thinking. “Okay. Let’s say I stand in front of a room full of people with a little vial of water. I tell them it’s peppermint oil. Then I open the vial and spill it on the floor. I tell them to raise their hands the minute the smell of peppermint reaches them. Without fail, about half the people in the room will eventually raise their hands.
